The Michigan Trails Fund provides funding in the form of grants to state and local units of government and trail advocates for trail planning, design, engineering, acquisition and construction of non-motorized, regional trail related projects.

Specifically, the MTF provides grants for non-motorized, regional trail projects, and in-part, uses the following criteria when determining which projects to fund:

  • Is the project part of a regional trail system?

  • How many miles of trail will the project connect?

  • Shovel readiness of the project?

  • Financial need of the applicant?

  • Does the project comply with fund donors requirements?

  • Have public funds been applied for/obtained?

  • What is the estimated number of users of the trail?
